Lauderdale County Garbage Pickup at a Glance

Quick Answer: Outside Florence and Lexington city limits, Lauderdale County Solid Waste collects household garbage, including in Killen, Rogersville and along county roads. It costs $21.00 a month for weekly pickup in a county-owned 95-gallon cart. Set the cart out the night before, bag everything, keep yard waste and cardboard out, and call 256-760-5878 to confirm your pickup day.

TLDR:

  • Lauderdale County collects garbage everywhere outside Florence and Lexington city limits.
  • That covers the towns of Killen and Rogersville and every home on the county roads.
  • The fee is $21.00 a month for once-a-week pickup in a county-owned 95-gallon cart.
  • Put the cart out the night before. The county’s two pages give different morning cutoffs.
  • Routes run by district and highway, not by town, so call the county for your day.
  • Brush gets a separate pickup by request, and the county landfill is free with proof of residence.
  • The county says keeping the cart clean is the resident’s job.

If you live in Killen, in Rogersville, or on a county road between them, your garbage service does not come from your town. It comes from the county. Neither town’s website explains it, and the county’s own pages are short, so most people learn the rules one missed pickup at a time.

This guide pulls every rule the county publishes into one place. Where the county does not say something, we tell you that too, so you know when to pick up the phone.

Who Collects Garbage in Lauderdale County

The short version: if you are not inside Florence or Lexington city limits, the county is your garbage service. That includes small towns that never set up their own.

The Lauderdale County Solid Waste Department page, as it read in October 2026, says the department provides residential garbage collection “for all of Lauderdale County excluding Florence City Limits and Lexington City Limits.”

The towns point the same way. The Town of Rogersville’s trash page sends its “Trash Information” button straight to the county’s solid waste site. The Town of Killen’s website has no garbage page at all; a search of the site for “garbage,” “trash” and “solid waste” returned nothing in October 2026.

If you live inside Florence city limits, the city runs your pickup under its own rules. Our Shoals garbage cart rules guide lays the city and county rules side by side. The rest of this post is about the county side.

What County Garbage Service Costs and What You Get

County service is simple to describe because there is only one version of it. Every household gets the same cart, the same weekly pickup and the same fee.

Per the county’s Solid Waste page, residential garbage collection is “$21.00 per month for one day per week collection using county-provided carts.” The county’s residential pickup schedule page fills in the cart details:

Cart detail What the county says
Size 95 gallons only
How many Up to 3 carts per residence
Extra carts Available “at a additional cost per month”; call the department
Who owns it The county. The cart stays with the home if you move
If it breaks Damaged beyond repair means the resident pays for the replacement
What goes in “Garbage must be in county provided cart”

The county does not publish the price of an extra cart or explain how billing works, so call 256-760-5878 before you count on either. The next thing to get right is timing.

When to Put Your Cart Out

This is the rule where the county’s two pages disagree, so the safe answer is the one both pages share.

The main Solid Waste page says to have garbage at the curb “by 5:00 A.M. on collection day” and calls setting it out the night before “highly recommended.” The pickup schedule page says “by the night before your collection day or by 5:30am the day of your collection.” Both pages back the night before, so that is the habit to build.

The schedule page also allows the cart “curbside or on the county right of way.” On a rural lot with a long driveway, that means the road edge, not the carport. Neither page sets a deadline for bringing the cart back in.

Which day is your pickup day?

The county runs four collection districts, one per weekday. The table on its Solid Waste page describes them by highway, not by town:

Day District, as the county lists it
Monday District 1: Limestone County to Alabama 101
Tuesday District 2: Alabama 101 to U.S. 43 (including Turtle Point Village)
Wednesday District 3: U.S. 43 to Alabama 20
Thursday District 4: Alabama 20 to the river and Tennessee state line

Killen and Rogersville are not named in that table, and a highway boundary can split a community. Call the Solid Waste office at 256-760-5878 to confirm your day rather than guessing from a map.

Holiday weeks

The schedule page lists six holidays the department observes: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If your pickup falls on one, “your service will resume the following day,” and the rest of that week’s routes run one day late, with Friday’s routes collected on Saturday.

What the County Cart Can and Cannot Take

Most missed pickups come down to what is in the cart, not when it went out. The county is specific about both.

The Solid Waste page says “Bagged household garbage only should be placed in garbage containers,” that containers should not be overloaded, and lists what should not go in them. The pickup schedule page adds that the county “does not pick up liquids, paints, or other hazardous type materials” and that medical waste needs special handling.

Yard waste and cardboard are the two that catch rural households most often, because there is so much of both. The good news is that the county has a separate path for each kind of overflow.

Brush, Building Debris and Bulky Items

Living outside a city limit usually means more yard and more limbs. The county runs a brush pickup and a landfill for exactly that.

Yard debris pickup. The Solid Waste page says residents outside Florence and Lexington city limits “may request yard debris pickup” by calling 256-760-5878. Piles can be no more than 4 feet high, 10 feet long and 5 feet deep. Place them within 2 feet of the road right-of-way, keep them 5 feet from mailboxes, vehicles, fences and poles, and never put them in a ditch or under utility lines.

The county landfill. The county runs a construction and demolition landfill at 5700 Highway 157 North (Cloverdale Road). Per the Solid Waste page, it accepts building debris, trees and limbs, paper, tires and appliances without Freon. Household garbage is accepted at the transfer station. County residents can dispose of items free of charge by showing a current utility bill and identification.

Burning brush. If you would rather burn limbs on your own land, state rules apply. ADEM’s guidance on disposing of land-clearing vegetation, posted in 2026, says only clean vegetation may be burned, on the property where it was generated, at least 500 feet from the nearest occupied dwelling, with the fire started between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Household trash is not clean vegetation.

Disposal options from the Lauderdale County Solid Waste Department, as listed in October 2026. Call the office to confirm hours before you haul a load.

The Solid Waste office keeps weekday hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday hours of 8:00 to 11:30 a.m., per the same page. It does not list landfill or transfer station hours, so call before you load the truck.

The county empties the cart. Cleaning it is on you, unless it is on us. Our Monthly plan cleans and deodorizes up to two carts every 4 weeks with 200°F water, from $30, and you do not need to be home.

The County Says the Clean Cart Is Your Job

There is one more rule on the pickup schedule page, and it is the one nobody remembers until July. The truck empties the cart. It does not wash it.

“Residents must maintain the cleanliness of their cart. It is recommended that you bag all waste to help maintain cleanliness.”

Lauderdale County Solid Waste, residential pickup schedule

That cart is county property and stays with the house, and a cracked one is the resident’s cost. A 95-gallon cart that sits by the road all week, in a Shoals summer, collects a film of leaked bags and residue in the bottom. Bagging everything helps, as the county says. It does not stop what leaks out of the bags.

TidyCan cleans carts inside and out at the curb with high-pressure, 200°F water, then sanitizes and deodorizes them, with no harsh chemicals. We come on the same day as your trash pickup, so the cart is already empty, and you do not need to be home. Up to two bins are included on every plan.

Our routes reach Killen and the 35645 area and Rogersville and the 35652 area. If you are elsewhere in the county, check your ZIP on our map of every town we serve, or compare cleaning plans and prices first.

What Killen and Rogersville Residents Ask About Lauderdale County Garbage

These are the questions that come up most on county garbage service. The county’s office is the final word on anything route-specific, so its number is in several answers.

How much is garbage pickup in Lauderdale County?

County garbage service is $21.00 a month for once-a-week pickup using county-provided carts. It covers every home outside Florence and Lexington city limits. Carts come in one size, 95 gallons, with up to three per home. Extra carts cost more each month, and the county asks you to call for that price.

What day is garbage pickup in Killen or Rogersville?

The county does not list days by town. It runs four districts, Monday through Thursday, described by highway, such as Alabama 101 to U.S. 43 on Tuesday. Because a highway line can split a community, call Lauderdale County Solid Waste at 256-760-5878 to confirm your day.

What time does my county garbage cart need to be out?

Put it out the night before. The county’s main page says by 5:00 a.m. on collection day, while its pickup schedule page says by 5:30 a.m. Both pages recommend the night before, which avoids the conflict. The cart can sit curbside or on the county right of way.

Can I put yard waste or cardboard in my county garbage cart?

No. The county lists yard waste and cardboard among the items that should not go in the cart, along with hot ash, liquids, batteries, hazardous materials and wet paint cans. Call 256-760-5878 to request a yard debris pickup, or take limbs to the county landfill on Highway 157.

Is the Lauderdale County landfill free for residents?

Yes, for items it accepts. The county says residents may dispose of items free of charge by showing a current utility bill and identification. Its landfill on Highway 157 North takes building debris, trees and limbs, paper, tires and appliances without Freon. Household garbage goes to the transfer station.

Does garbage pickup change on holidays in Lauderdale County?

Yes, on six holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If your pickup falls on one, service resumes the next day. The rest of that week’s routes run one day late, with Friday’s routes collected on Saturday.

Who is responsible for cleaning a county garbage cart?

You are. The county’s pickup schedule says “Residents must maintain the cleanliness of their cart” and recommends bagging all waste. The cart belongs to the county and stays with the house, and a resident pays to replace one damaged beyond repair. TidyCan can wash it at the curb on your pickup day.

Keep the county cart clean without touching it. We wash and sanitize your carts at the curb on pickup day across Killen, Rogersville and east Lauderdale County. Every plan price is published up front, and you do not need to be home.
