Tuscumbia runs its own garbage service, every household is required to be on it, and the city code makes it unlawful to let your container sit open or let garbage pile up around it. TidyCan cleans your cart on your pickup day, so the lid closes on a clean bin and nothing collects around it. Service starts at $30 every 4 weeks for up to two bins.
Tuscumbia’s own crews pick up the garbage
Tuscumbia collects its own garbage with city crews. Section 10-41 of the city code says the service is “performed by the officers, agents, and employees of the city” and that “public participation in and subscription to the city’s solid waste collection system is mandatory.” The work falls to the Public Works Department, which the city describes as responsible for “the collection and disposal of garbage and brush within city limits.”
The fee rides on your city utility bill. As codified in 2021, section 10-42 sets it at $16.00 a month per home and $8.00 for each additional can, plus a $1.75 monthly recycling fee collected for the Shoals Solid Waste Disposal Authority. Pay late and a rate 10 percent higher applies.
The rule that matters: a closed lid and a clean spot
Tuscumbia’s code does not set a clock time for putting your cart out or taking it back in. What it does set is a standard for the container itself, and it comes with teeth.
“It shall be unlawful for any person in control of any premises to allow or permit garbage or trash container to be open or uncovered, and it shall be unlawful for any such person to permit or allow an accumulation of garbage, trash, or litter in the vicinity of any garbage or trash container serving such premises.”
Tuscumbia Code of Ordinances § 9-50
A violation of that article is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500, up to 30 days in jail, or both, and “each day a violation continues to exist shall be considered a separate offense” (§ 9-52). The code also asks every house to store its garbage “so that it cannot become scattered by wind, dogs, or otherwise” (§ 9-43).
A cart with a sour, sticky interior is the one that draws flies, gets nosed open by dogs and ends up with a ring of litter around it. Keeping the inside clean is the simplest way to keep the outside legal.

Tuscumbia Public Works, for reference: 301-A East 7th Street, 256-386-5674, Monday to Friday 8:00 to 4:00. Bagged grass and brush up to eight feet long and eight inches across are picked up free on the city’s schedule. Bulk items such as furniture and mattresses go by appointment, two items at a time, and cannot go out more than 48 hours before the appointment.

Why a Shoals summer is the whole problem
NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Muscle Shoals Regional Airport, the reporting station for the Shoals, put the average July high at 91.6°F and the average July low at 71.4°F. The nights barely cool the cart off. A closed plastic container with food waste in the bottom sits in that for weeks at a time, and that is what turns a cart into something you hold your breath to open.
From the historic district to the edge of town
Tuscumbia had 9,222 residents in 2024, according to the Census Bureau, up from 9,054 in 2020, on a little over nine square miles. Almost all of it sits in the 35674 ZIP code. Two areas are on the National Register of Historic Places: the Tuscumbia Historic District and the Colbert County Courthouse Square Historic District. The older houses there are on the same city service and the same rules as every newer street.
